The Beholder is described as a fantastical romance whirlwind of a story but for me it didn’t come across like that. It is about Selah, who is the next in line to rule her country but is sent off to visit different countries in search of a suitor.

I went into this book, expecting it to be heavily romanced based and was happily surprised that it had a lot more political intrigue than was expected. I own the Fairyloot exclusive edition with its stunning foiled title and pink sprayed edges and was delighted to find that the writing style is just as beautiful. It was a quick and easy read (I was reading it as part of the Fairyloot read-a-long and managed to finish it on day 3, instead of day 5) and the character were loveable and interesting for the most part. However, because there were so many characters, there wasn’t enough time to get to know them all and so they could feel two dimensional at times.

Despite flying through this book, I did have a few issues with it. One of which is that things seemed to happen out of nowhere, there was no build-up or foreshadowing and it felt like the author was making it up as she went along. It was also a bit too dramatic for me. I felt like the author was trying too hard to make the main character, Selah, relatable which ended up in a feeling of it being unrealistic as to how certain people reacted to certain events. It was also a very slow paced story and felt like a contemporary disguised as a fantasy until the end few chapters where the politics really came into play. The love triangle also seemed very forced.

Before diving into this book I also thought it was a stand-alone but now believe it is part of a duology (correct me if there’s going to be more than two). I believe that this first book was an easy set up for the rest of the story and look forward to see what the second book holds.

It was a quick, fun read that entertained and I will look into picking up the sequel when it comes out but it wasn’t anything special.

What did you think of this fantasy? Let me know in the comments!

I’ve been so looking forward to reading this but it’s a shame that a lot of people have felt it was lacking something, I tend not to like books with too many characters as I feel, as you said, that they turn out 2d, great review xx
